Day 2 – ‘Design: Origin, Histories and consequences’ & ‘Hello World’


Today start with listening to the history and theory of design called the DHT course at the Glasgow Film Theater. First, the lecture began with an introduction to the lecturer and D & HT, introducing Gary Becker’s “Human Capital” in Economist. To summarize the content of human capital is this.

– Specific Human Capital: The knowledge-power you may need to carry out a project within your specific studio discipline.

– General Human Capital: The wider knowledge that gives you the edge over your peers and competitors – cultural insights, historical precedents etc.


After that, he explained about ‘T shaping skills’ and talked about the value of education. Today’s lecture was not as clear as ever, but I understood to some extent what lecturer wanted to say. Today ‘s lecture was an introduction of D&HT course, so lecture ended earlier than original timetable. I was confused about whether I had to return to the studio early or to gather after lunch as originally scheduled.

My judgment was already group meeting started, but I went back to the studio because I thought it would be right to participate in the group work even it started. Today’s brief was called ‘Hello World’.


This is the outline of the ‘Hello World’ class. “Artists and Designers see the world a little differently; through personal observation, they spot the opportunity, beauty, and meaning in things others hadn’t noticed. Motivation to interpret observations in unique ways distinguishes artists and designers as creators, inventors, and originators of the new.

A good design requires analytical observations of various activities, environments, objects, users and time. This course will develop and raise awareness about it.”

In addition, this brief was made up of three main components that collaboration, observation and presentation.

In the ‘Collaboration’ section, it was time to discuss with other people about their views and perceptions how I understand around of the world and to understand each other’s epistemological values ​​by assigning new groups.

What should be noted in the ‘Observation’ section was one of the crucial points of how the individual observed the objects or places and how they communicated with the place with the feeling.

After that, the main point of presentation is to see how the other person observes the world around him / herself based on the data obtained from the observation. The total presentation time is 10 minutes and the individual presentation time is 1 minute.


Our topic was ‘Monumental Space’. After receiving the paper, we made a mind map and sorted out the various thoughts we had, and extracted only important words and reduced.

The answer left after discussion was ‘sense of place’. In detail, the train station and airport, which are the starting and ending points of the trip, were discussed. Thereafter, a place called ‘my room’ was mentioned during further discussions.

This has not led to the conclusion that monumental places are confined to physical places, or that abstract and personal places can be included monumental places. So, tomorrow we are going to go Central station and a friend’s house. after that, we will compare with the two places where is more suitable to monumental spaces and choose one place.

However, after further discussion before going home, ‘Central Station’ was selected as a result. The reason why ‘My room’ was not selected is we will visit one group member’s room but that room already observed every day by herself so she hard to find new perspectives or feeling in that place. Another problem is all of group members cannot access that room at the same time. Finally, biggest problem is time limitation we have two days before our presentation.


After observing the place tomorrow, we need to choose one word among twelve words should be selected to make a connection with the observed place based on individual perspective or feeling. The following words were given.













In addition, time management was also important for this brief. We decided when we will meet in the Central station tomorrow, and after we make a list what we will do.

The meeting place is ‘Central Station’, and arriving at 10 o’clock, not meeting anyone before finished our observation in the Central station, and then when we finished our observation we meet at 10:30 am under the big clock of the train station. We are not stay in the station only in the morning, we will visit the station again and observe on different time. However, the schedule could be changed.

And in this task, we need to eliminated digital work and we aim on physical work, such as drawing or watercolor. Tutors mentioned when she explained this brief introduction. In my case, I will try to do drawing using by colored pencils, crayons, pencils and ballpoint pens.

I should be aware of some things when I arrive tomorrow and observe the train station. When I observe activities, environments, objects, users, and time that I see in the place I should express multi-sensory feelings. And tutor asked our group tomorrow plan and the how was progression of discussion. At the end of this answer, today studio work was finished.

I came back home and organized the contents of the design theory lecture I heard and summarized the group discussions about ‘Hello World’.
